New report shows where the most COVID-19, flu, RSV cases are in South Carolina
Health officials in South Carolina have updated a report that shows where respiratory diseases, like flu and COVID-19, are happening most in the state and how many outbreaks of each illness have been reported. You can see the full report here or read the summary below:Data from Oct. 8, 2023, through Dec. 30: There were 333 COVID-19 outbreaks reported in long-term care facilities, 10 outbreaks reported in childcare facilities and 16 outbreaks reported in school settings. During the same time period there were 13 outbreaks of flu in long-term care facilities, seven outbreaks of flu in childcare facilities and 117 outbreaks of flu in school settings. For RSV there were three outbreaks in long-term care facilities, 46 outbreaks in childcare settings and 23 outbreaks in school settings. What is an outbreak defined by DHEC? Outbreaks in schools and childcare centers: an outbreak is defined as 20% or more of students/staff within a shared setting of more than five individuals absent or sent home due to Influenza, COVID-19 and/or RSV within a 72-hour period.”Outbreaks in long-term care facilities are different for each illness: Influenza: An occurrence of two cases among residents or staff members within the same unit or with the same exposure who test positive for influenza within 72 hours of each other.COVID-19: An occurrence of one or more facility-acquired case of COVID-19 in a resident and/or three or more facility-acquired case of COVID-19 among healthcare personnel, reported via NHSN.RSV: An occurrence or increase in the number of RSV cases above what is normally expected in a long-term care facility.The report also has data from Dec. 24 through Dec. 30 that shows the following: School setting: Week of Dec 23: One COVID-19 outbreak reported, eight flu outbreaks were reported, one RSV outbreak reported. For the same week it showed about 1,000 visits for COVID-19 and less than 1,000 visits for RSV. According to the report, During the week of Dec. 23, more than 500 were admitted the hospital for flu and about 400 were admitted for COVID-19.

- Week of Dec 23: One COVID-19 outbreak reported, one flu outbreak reported and no RSV outbreaks reported
- For the week of Dec 30, no outbreaks were reported in any of the those settings.
Long-term care settings: Week of Dec. 23
- 28 COVID-19 outbreaks reported, two flu outbreaks reported and one RSV outbreak reported
- For the week of Dec. 30 there were 46 COVID-19 outbreaks reported, six flu outbreaks reported and one RSV outbreak reported.
