Neurodiversity-Focused DEI Initiatives

The Neurodiversity @ IBM program is an initiative that aims to create a more inclusive workplace for people who see, understand, and think about the world differently. The program started in 2015 as an affinity group for autistic employees and allies and, over the next decade, has expanded to embrace all forms of neurological diversity, such as ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette syndrome, and more. The program also partnered with Uptimize to create a “Neurodiversity 101” training course for IBM employees, which raises awareness and reduces bias against neurologically different individuals.

The Neurodiversity @ IBM program has positive implications for neurodivergent workers and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) culture at large. By creating a safe and supportive environment for neurodiverse employees, IBM can also foster a culture of belonging, respect, and empowerment for all its workers. By hiring and supporting neurodiverse talent, IBM can benefit from their unique perspectives, skills, and strengths, such as attention to detail, analytical thinking, and creativity. By raising awareness and reducing stigma around neurodiversity, IBM can also contribute to the social change and acceptance of neurodivergent people in society.
